If you’ve been attending our concerts for a while, you’re probably familiar with the guitar artistry of Jimmy Grant, who has performed here twice — once with a quartet and once with a trio. This time, he’s part of a yet another trio, but you’re probably not familiar with his bandmates, who live and work abroad. We can’t reveal their names until their work visas are final, but we guarantee that you’re in for a treat.
Native to Northern California, Jimmy grew up in a household full of rich musical influences such as Russian folk, Celtic, bluegrass, and classical, but from a young age he gravitated towards the music of Django Reinhardt. (His other major musical influences are Bach, Benny Goodman, and Joe Pass.) He studied with acclaimed guitarists Jim Nichols and Howard Alden, and has performed with artists such as David Grisman, Gonzalo Bergara, Trio Dinicu, Rhythm Future Quartet, and the Hot Club of San Francisco, at venues such as Djangofest Northwest, The Savannah Music Festival, Nor Cal Jazz Festival, and The New York Hot Jazz Festival. In addition to performing, Jimmy teaches private students and has been on the faculty of the Django in June Festival in Massachusetts.
“[Jimmy Grant] is a superb Django-style player, someone who understands the master’s inherent lyricism, creating resonant melodies full of memorable phrases.”
—Michael Steinman, Jazz Lives
